Elijah James Allen, 78, a resident of Covington for more than 50 years died at 11:20 a.m. Saturday June 16, at his home, 711 Crocket St. Mr. Allen had been in ill health for 7 years and seriouly ill two weeks. Born March 3, 1884 at Browntown, Ill, he was the son of Wiliam and Margaret Summers Allen. He was married to Bessie Lawson March 24, 1906 and she survives. Mr. Allen, a retired farmer had been employed by the Grab-It-Here food store in Covington following his retirement from farming. He was a member of the Covington First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Madeline Layton and Mrs. Lura Marr, both of Covington; two grandson; two great granchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois a son Kenneth and four sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday June 18 at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Glen Ray, assisted by Rev James Snodgrass officiated. Burial was in Mt. Hope with Hegg Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were: Noel Ward, Clifford Martin, Charles Trott, Sr, Roy Hunt, Marquess Osborn and Nelson Galloway. Honorary pallbearers were John Reed and John McElwee. The flower bearers were members of the Sunshine Thimble Club of which Mrs. Allen in a member.
